Julio Garcia
1917– 2003
Julio Garcia was a smiling, cherubic man. He carved in the small open space behind a friend’s home in Northern California. He lived with his wife of fifty one years. After watching his figures emerge from the blocks of wood, he was happy to have them come live in his house for a time, then like children coming of age, he would send them off into the world.
Garcia’s characters are bright and bold, they stand proud and straight. Sometimes they are portraits of people he knew, sometimes his imagination was the inspiration.
Garcia’s carvings have been included in the exhibitions, "Visions from the Left Coast," Contemporary Arts Forum, Santa Barbara (Fall 1995); and "Memories and Visions," University of Nevada, Reno (Nov.-Dec. 1996), and Nevada Institute of Contemporary Art, Las Vegas (Jan.-Feb. 1997).
